This past week has been a great one in the Portland area if you love the sport of cross country.

The High School District Meets showing that many of the teams are rounding into championship form.

The West Coast Championships with an amazing team battle between University of Portland and BYU held in torrential downpours at Fernhill Park. The Gonzaga Bulldogs continued the rise to the higher levels of the WCC under the coaching of Tyson and Ley.

The WCC hosted a Rookie Run that encouraged the middle school kids to continue on with the sport and shared wisdom of training and sportsmanship.

At the end of the weekend a few of us put on the PDXC Oregon State Middle School Championships at a soggy Fernhill Park.

The day started with friends from work and coaching arriving at the break of dawn to rake the acorns off the course as we marked it in preparation for the 600+ athletes that did come and brave the weather for the meet.

We put up our tents, plugged in our equiptment (computors, scanners,PA System) and set up a Running Community that also included T shirts, USATF Booth, Retail and a Medical Unit (that drove into the soggy grass and ended up being towed after the meet completed Wink)

Once we figured out how to work the PA system the races went off like clockwork. Just as I was giving instructions to the runners our local world class runners, Evan Jager and German Fernandez showed up to encourage the athletes as they toed the line and then greet them at the finish.

The coordination of a former PDXC Runner leading on a bike along with coaches, Nike employees and local high school athletes working the chute and awards as well as helping with the course set up and teardown made me appreciate how amazing Portland is as a Running Community.

This series was made possible by a grant from an organization that it's sole purpose is the promote the sport of track and cross country in the Willamette Valley. Where else can that happen?

I loved seeing how excited the athletes, coaches and families were as they left for home taking back some great memories and a little hardware to show those back home their success at the PDXC Oregon State Middle School Championships.

We can't wait for 2013!
